Tapestry Software Engineer Celebrates Golden Year Anniversary

August 22, 2018

Dave Pflasterer, center, celebrates 50 years with Tapestry Solutions. He is pictured with Robin Wright, President & CEO (at left) and Debbie Churchill, Vice President, Mission Products and Services (at right).

Anyone reaching the 20- or 30-year anniversary mark is rare enough to merit recognition at most companies today. But Dave Pflasterer took that anomaly a few decades further when he recently celebrated his half-century work anniversary at Tapestry Solutions, a Boeing Company.

Fifty years ago, Dave began his career at McDonnell Douglas, writing software for a milling machine. After McDonnell Douglas merged with Boeing in 1997, Dave became part of Mission Planning teams with Boeing/ Tapestry, serving in various roles for programs including the Tomahawk, F/A 18, F-22, and occasional periods with F-15.

Today, he serves as the F-22 Lead Software Test Engineer with Tapestry’s Mission Planning team at the company’s office in St Louis, MO.

“We are pleased to honor Dave for achieving this incredible milestone.  His dedication, loyalty and commitment to excellence has inspired others and helped grow our business,” said Debbie Churchill, vice president, Mission Products & Services.  “The consistency of dedicated team members like Dave is the foundation for our success.”

As a global leader in information management software and services, Tapestry Solutions provides mission planning solutions for military aircraft including the F-15, F/A-18,  F-22 and T-38, as well as weapons systems, bombers and unmanned air vehicles.  The company is currently developing the next generation of mission planning technology that will help the U.S. Air Force fully integrate and automate its force-level planning system.

These are among the programs that Dave has worked on over the years. Dave earned his degree in mathematics in 1965 from Union University, Tenn., in 1965; however, he did not jump into the workforce right away. Instead, he stepped up to the plate as part of the San Francisco Giants minor league baseball organization from 1965-1967, where he played for the Fresno Giants, the Lexington Giants, the Magic Valley Cowboys, and the Arizona Instructional League Giants.

In fact, Dave played alongside Bobby Bonds for the Fresno Giants and against future greats including Tony La Russa, Reggie Jackson, and Rollie Fingers. At the end of the ’67 season, he returned to St. Louis, attended Washington University, and received a Master’s Degree in Computer Science.

In 2013, 46 years after beginning his baseball career, Dave was inducted into the Union University Sports Hall of Fame. His .525 batting average still stands as the top batting average for a season at that University.

Besides his careers in baseball and software, Dave has enjoyed a happy family life. He and his wife, Sue, have three children. Hats off to Dave!

Tapestry Solutions Awarded $26 Million to Develop Advanced Airdrop Mission Planning Software for U.S. Air Force

November 15, 2017

The U.S. Air Force has selected Tapestry Solutions, Inc., a Boeing Company (NYSE: BA), to develop advanced mission planning software for airdrop missions tailored to the C-17 and C-130 military transport aircraft. Work will be performed under a Mission Planning Enterprise Contract II (MPEC II) delivery order, which is valued at $26 million over a four-year period.

Tapestry, the prime contractor, has teamed with Jacobs Engineering and MORSE Corp to provide software development for Consolidated Airdrop Tool (CAT) versions 6.x through 8.x. The team will also perform software maintenance services on all fielded software versions.

CAT software is used to calculate and plot both conventional and precision airdrop solutions to accurately deliver supplies to warfighters in remote, austere environments. The upgrades will include a new intuitive interface that will allow the user to quickly perform airdrop tasks and provide greater automated inflight planning capabilities.

“We’re pleased to leverage our mission planning expertise to enhance the computing speed, accuracy, efficiency and automation onboard the C-17 and C-130 aircraft. The upgrades will reduce aircrew workload and prevent distractions from flight tasks, which will make our troops’ jobs easier and safer,” said Robin Wright, president and CEO, Tapestry Solutions.

CAT works alongside the Army’s Joint Precision Airdrop System (JPADS) – a high-altitude, all-weather capable system that includes a GPS-based cargo parachute system. JPADS allows cargo to hit a single designated drop zone from multiple release points, allowing aircraft to safely avoid enemy ground fire.

During airdrop missions, crewmembers run JPADS-CAT software on laptops, gathering mission data needed to plan the route of flight and increase cargo airdrop accuracy. Among other functions, the software runs aircraft performance and weather algorithms to determine acceptable air release points.

“The CAT program is an exciting win for our team,” said Michael Longarzo, Tapestry’s Business Development Director who led the team’s capture effort. “It not only combines the core strengths from Tapestry, Jacobs Engineering and MORSE – but also draws on the resources from the Boeing Enterprise to create a winning solution for our customers.”

Royal Australian Air Force Signs Deal with Jeppesen & Tapestry Solutions for Mission Management Suite; Software to Optimize Military Air Operations

June 7, 2017

ENGLEWOOD, COLO., June 7, 2017 – The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) has signed an agreement with Jeppesen and Tapestry Solutions, both Boeing Companies [NSYE:BA], to integrate the Mission Management Suite to optimize military operations. Formerly known as Jeppesen Operations Solution, the Mission Management Suite from Jeppesen and Tapestry will enhance RAAF air mission planning, operations management and resource scheduling in the complex Air Operations Center environment.

“Working with the Jeppesen and Tapestry team to integrate critical operational tools delivered through the Mission Management Suite will enhance operational mission effectiveness and improve efficiency,” said James Hogg, commanding officer and deputy director of the Air Mobility Control Centre, Royal Australian Air Force. “This operations management resource will allow us to maximize use of our capabilities, including resources, assets and time to ensure optimal performance.”

The Mission Management Suite is a military operations center suite of applications that efficiently manages air mission activity throughout the full mission lifecycle. It is a Web-based solution that provides military operators with a single user interface that integrates multiple functions in a unified platform. The solution will help the RAAF optimize their Air Mobility Group air-lift operations, which is managed by the Air Mobility Control Centre (AMCC) in Sydney. The Military aircraft that the AMCC task and control include KC-30 MRTT (Multi Role Tanker Transport), C-130J Hercules, C-27J Spartans, C-17, B300 King Air, BBJ 737 and CL-604 Challenger.

“The Royal Australian Air Force will significantly improve AMCC operations, specifically related to request and mission planning, diplomatic clearance management, automated/on-demand report generation, expense tracking and management, hazardous cargo management, security and integration with their existing systems,” said Matt Buettner, director, Jeppesen Flight Planning and Dispatch. “We will continue to work with RAAF to further enhance Mission Management Suite to meet their exact operational needs.”

Additionally, Mission Management Suite provides RAAF commanders with increased, real-time visibility to their operations and provides improved transparency, according to Kurt Meidel, director, Tapestry Solutions. “When fully implemented, the tool will enable the RAAF to manage 50 percent more missions without adding any staffing headcount, providing significant cost savings,” said Meidel.
